I use it on virtual machines a lot, and it doesn't .
Version of AVG Anti-Virus is very lightweight.

For Browser, It really depends on your browsing....
For lightweight antivirus, honestly - I think Eset Nod 32 is actually lighter on resources, but it has gone downhill so much in recent releases, the only one I would recommend is Microsoft Security Essentials .

Most antivirus programs consist of at least two lines, one being the interface / control program and the other being the actual antivirus engine / service .
There is no one answer as it depends on what antivirus you are using .

Outsourcing anti-spam/anti-virus entirely eliminates the need to keep the software up-to-date etc, but does leave you open to the potential of an in-office virus outbreak.
Extra value as an MX backup.

Over last year we have tried to deploy antivirus software on production linux servers. In most cases after a few weeks under month end loads applications start running slow, or do not work as it should.

While there isn't many viruses that target Linux do what to run anti-virus checking is on mail servers and on file servers that server Windows clients sure there are more.
Anti-virus products do have uses on Linux.
