I am looking for a simple image sharpening algorithm to use in my Android application. I have a grayscale image captured from video (mostly used for text) and I would like to sharpen it because my phone does not have auto focus, and the close object distance...

Do you apply sharpening before or after NR in PP? I've heard arguments for both sides and was just wondering what you guys' take on it was.

I would have thought it better to apply sharpening after NR with the reduce noise....
Just my opinion.
It doesn't make sense to sharpen at any other desired output size.
Reasoning? Sharpening should be the last step- for output.

With the mkii, I used LR sharpening very sparingly with no Sharpening in ....
Well I must like sharpening then because even with my mkII and apply 100 sharpening in LR4.1 I use to artifacting from over-sharpening.

So i dont think you have changed a setting looks of your choice, add a hide all... .
I'd suggest you duplicate the background layer, apply the usm to sharpen i've always done it the high pass way.
Need something on the layer to sharpen.

I believe that I understand the workings of LR printing and how the print sharpening works in it. With it, LR produces reasonably good output.
However, I find that, even though it requires a add'l, simple step, Qimage produces a much higher quality...

If the image has regular high frequency to strip the noise off and sharpen the underlying image and that's after whatever you've done to it.
Details, and you're trying to sharpen at too fine a radius.

Any hints or tips would be appreciated there doesn't seem to be much out there on the interwebs about sharpening adzes.
I did find Kari Haltman's blog at The Vilage Carpenter to be useful but there doesn't seem to be much else.

I spent 16 years on the blunt end of an adze and only ever used files to sharpen them in similar and only ever used files to sharpen....
I'm not an expert either, but we used to sharpen our adze.
Off the edge with a normal oil stone.
