I want to install the files for supporting East Asian languages on Windows XP, which is usually possible through the reagional and language options. However, the relevant checkbox (see below) is deactivated /grayed out on my machine.

Of them mention that you have to have a specific version of XP to enable East Asian languages so "Select a language to match the language version of the non-Unicode programs you want to use:", choose your language.

If you have the East Asian Language Pack installed and if your font doesn't support.
That includes Japanese Characters it will display correctly in Windows XP even if East Asian language Pack is not installed.

but most of them seem to barely cook/eat asian food
dont really engage much with asian culture like music or anything else very much
their lives are by and large are not that different from your equivalent...
