I have a spare afternoon/evening with the kids (8 & 4) in London on the 28th Jan. Leaving Olympia, Kensington around 13:30. Have a travel card so getting around should not be a problem.

The evening is a different matter for drinkers, but there really aren't many of those sorts of pubs left in the touristy parts of London.
Have any problems in most central London pubs during the afternoon.

It's a famous tourist area where there are various attractions, shops, street shows etcI think you'd have 2 options on where to stay, if you stay in central London, you can get a car to the airport but it's quicker and airport hotels....

Fly in to London, visit Amsterdam....
The idea is to get a hotel with easy jawed (also called multi-city) so that you don't spend time back tracking to London just to fly home.
London's sites are rather spread out--not all in one area.
