It's a famous tourist area where there are various attractions, shops, street shows etcI think you'd have 2 options on where to stay, if you stay in central London, you can get a car to the airport but it's quicker and airport hotels....

Fly in to London, visit Amsterdam....
The idea is to get a hotel with easy jawed (also called multi-city) so that you don't spend time back tracking to London just to fly home.
London's sites are rather spread out--not all in one area.

You must not miss the bridge, London eye Big Ben and in summary entire London is tourist area, but it was a travel to get closer to all the tourist areas.
