Have you read the articles from the DARPA grand challenge winners? DARPA site Google Scholar I believe the "DARPA Grand Challenge" style of automation meets your .1 requirement as there are plenty of innovation on that front .

If you march in to an automotive customer with anything other than CAN, you'll end up spending.
Is not a better choice than CAN for an automotive application with your data rate and noise immunity requirements.

I guess it depends on how you drive, and also on what type of locker you have .
They are supposed to be 30% stronger than OEM.
You never know.
The D35 may last forever locked on 35s or grenade when taking a turn on the street .
