I'd buy a backup server with a few 1TB drives and backup everything to the backup server.
What you need is backup location.
Raid will only provide you with backups in case of hardware failure.

Why is it a problem? Can you not use multiple tapes for the backup? Splitting the job isn't data and see if you can delete or exclude parts from your backup set.
