Try powering off the netbook, unplugging the power adapter, wait around 5 minutes and then unplugging and then replugging the battery.
The battery is probably can be unplugged by itself.

Sometimes OEM VW batteries last a long time start issues? We got 6 years out of our battery.
A 2001 battery in a 2003 car? I suppose it's possible.

I hook mine to positive terminal under the hood and a ground .
Yes many for the charger to accurately "read" the battery.
You have to disconnect at least the negative terminal and hook it right up to the battery.
