One of the our distributed apps are using heart beat to detect the peer's disconnection(e.g. LAN line broken, etc) . is the heart beating necessary?

I don't see even the Heat beating this Bulls team 4 out of 7 times.
The way this Bulls team plays together as a team, their defense, their depth. I can't picture a team in the league beating the Bulls 4 out of 7 games in the playoffs this season.
