Virtualization has some great benefits, but there are times when a virtualized server needs more performance and should be moved to physical.
My question is, how do you tell when these times are? I'm looking for measurable data and metrics that show moving...

I disagree that a virtual server would need to be moved to physical because of performance on the physical hardware, you would be hard pressed to notice a difference in performance I think.

This question got me thinking about the physical health of developers.
As programming is definately not a physical excercise, developers are often prone to develop physical complaints like RSI. Should companies do more to stimulate excercise and healthy...

I've been designing quite a few Windows Forms applications lately (data-entry apps, office integration, etc), and although I've always designed with logical tiers in mind, the "middle tier" business logic layer has always been hosted on the desktop PC...

My preferred tactic is to keep physical seperation in terms.
What I mean by this is that you have to refresh interface mappings etc effort to set up and maintain .

I would like to hear community opinions on reasons to switch, to utilise, or when one should consider a x64 platform. Plus are there any additional benefits of running 64-bit Windows 7? over 64-bit Pre-Win7 OS's?

Bit Windows is limited to max 4 GB of RAM
The benefit is that each process can then address (but limited to 4GB per process) but in practice no modern OS actually implements that so a second benefit, etc can all benefit from more....

Note: When I refer to tier, I mean a physical tier. Many of the questions on this site relating to "tiers" are referring to logical layers, which is not what I'm asking about.
I am designing an app using a standard "3 layer" architecture, with presentation...

The reason scalability is quoted, adding the physical remove for the database is strongly recommended.
physical architecture is not necessarily performance related.

Recently I made the switch from using asmx web services to using wcf services, the transition is nearly finished, but I know I'm in for a lot of error checking and testing to make sure everything ported as expected.
My question is - so far I can only ...

More protocol.
For example, you can write features like throttling just by changing preferences, which I haven't seen much benefit of.
WCF allows you detach service from the physical layout and protocols.

The "party model" is a "pattern" for relational database design. At least part of it involves finding commonality between many entities, such as Customer, Employee, Partner, etc., and factoring that into some more "abstract" database tables.
I'd like ...
