I have only one child but the thought of doing it at home would terrify...

I'd go for the home births anyway.
I had two hospital and two home births.

For the record, I'm actually for home births. I think this was a tragic accident but that doesn't mean that giving birth at home is inherently dangerous.

While many here speak of having their first child or two, or X1 multiple birth, naturally.
What some who never thought could have children then through IVF, a couple of multiples births, they then have say 5 or 6 or more!

While I would not choose to give birth birthing center at the hospital.
I think alternative birthing centers are a good compromise.

Over here in Australia, many midwives are reeling from the a news story about a 36yr old mother, who has died during a homebirth. There are not too many details at present, just that this mum, lobbied for home births, took all necessary precautions etc...
