I have a dying hard drive and a replacement drive (same model). What is the best way to copy the old drive to the new drive?
Its a dual boot setup - Ubuntu Karmic and Windows XP.
I really don't want to have to reinstall both operating systems and all ...

Just go myself a new computer and thinking of how set it up.
I have win7 HP and will probably install at least some version of Ubuntu on it shortly to have dual boot. Might come other Linux distros too in the future.

Easiest thing - A nas network share that will just work in both or a USB pen drive!
Apart from that, As Ubuntu can read from NTFS but Windows can't read from EXT2/4 etc .

I came across this odd problem when putting together a PC from scratch. At first, I had 2 HDD drives connected: one SATA, one IDE (and an IDE DVD drive too, by the way).
It all worked like a charm: I got the master/slave setting right on the two IDE drives...

Makes keeping track of which HDD easier.
Use EasyBCD to set up the dual boot afterwards appears no matter which letter its been assigned.
That way you don't have to fear formatting it.

There I set /boot as the mountpoint for the small partition and put the rest of the Ubuntu....
Then ran the Ubuntu Desktop installation and chose manual partioning .
A new small first primary Ext2 partition for /boot with GParted did the trick.

I boot directly into UE (my primary - hdd 1) and can select XP from the UE boot menu - XP is located on my secondary hdd - they do not share partitions on the same ....
Actually, each OS is on it's own separate hdd.

The simplest way to put my problem is that in DOS, I could solve it with "sys C:\" then FDisk to make sure the drive I want is Boot, Active and System.
Some years ago, I set up a 1 TB SATA drive to dual boot XP Pro 32 bit and 64 bit. Lots of things changed...
