When Win 7 went RTM, I upgraded my laptop from XP. But to protect myself against the possibility of having data inaccessible, I got a new disk and put it in the laptop, and took the old (XP) disk and put it in a USB enclosure.

Everything is stored in the RAM (if the usb-distribution is done properly), and thus not affecting anything.
Just don't install or do anything to your hard drive .
Running from USB, you should be fine.

I'm trying to install ubuntu on an usb, the problem is, I don't want to dual boot once done, I want to keep my windows but boot ubuntu using virtualbox and use the usb as my harddrive for ubuntu, but how?
Virtualbox will not recognize the usb as a harddrive...

Make one on the USB drive and tell Virtualbox to read your USB drive, but there will be a file on there ending in .vdi, that is your virtual disk still interested, here is a guide I wrote....
In Virtualbox you have to make virtual hard disks.

Other operating systems can boot from external USB or firewire drives, but Windows has to my knowledge never had this ability, at least not officially out of the box.
