There are other options though such as starting with networking support (adding more drivers and settings to the boot), or the command prompt as as shell instead of Explorer.

Your computer is either set to boot from the network before the hard drive, or it can't see the hard drive....
I suggest going into your BIOS and disabling network boot.
It sounds like you are getting into the F12 network boot process.

Both options are easier alternatives to installing Windows and Linux to dual boot.

The default is usually the Quick version I am having the same issue after I updated the BIOS thru the ThinkAdvantage... .
Is it possible you have enable a POST other than the usual quick POST? Some BIOSs will allow a more detailed POST and that takes some time .

I couldn't do my job nearly so well without PXE booting -- all the other machines start with a memtest boot option, then....
I manage a cluster of about 20 physical machines that are located from anyone at the DC .

Alternatively, you could press the associated keyboard shortcut to reveal the boot....
Note, however, that your BIOS must support booting from USB devices and that the boot order should have USB precede HDD devices.
