Borax? Reading some 'home methods' for cleaning & it's suggested to use Borax in several places.

Some of the lard recipe's I've read include the use of borax. I didn't know what the function of borax was so I looked it up.
Borax boosts the cleaning ability by softening the water and boosting the sudsing.
I guess my question is is borax that necessary...

For laundry they sometimes added borax as a water softener, I think, but don't know much about that..

I use borax, washing soda, and oxiclean (the eco-friendly family blog recipe).
We have not had any issues at all.
I rinse my diapers twice.
I use the homemade EFF recipe that has borax in it.

As in the soap. I have a project that requires about 4-5 gallons of Borax. What's the best place to buy it? I am a member at Costco, but haven't seen it there. I'm in California if that helps narrow down stores. An odd request ... so thanks for anyone...

So, to really know, fill the washer without diapers, add whatever the box says, close the washer and... .
What does it say on the box? It really depends on how hard your water is and how much water is in the washer .
I'd try 2 tbsp, plus the usual detergent.

So I make dry detergent which used to be equal parts borax/super washing soda/oxyclean + 1 bar soap per 3 cups detergent. I used the same mix for my diapers minus the bar soap.
