I want to shoot my wheels a bright silver it's tough picking stuff off the net from webpage color...thought it might be wiser to ask your recommendations for a bright bright silver like some of the modern cars come with its an almost whitish looking silver...

Is there any command (or API) to set X.Org/Linux color brightness? In other words, I need something as handy as the xgamma command but for changing RGB brightness real-time .

I know many people, including myself who use undocumented methods here and there, for example to check for connectivity or add text fields to UIAlertViews .
Using a undocumented API of a public framework is not necessarily bad .

If it's something you think would be useful, I suggest you file an enhancement request .
This is not available in the SDK.
