Likely best to get a pro to inspect your situation, and give some guidance just want some ambiance... .
But why not put in a small
wood burning stove and utilize some of the heat to warm the house and have and not meant as a fireplace.

insert in your fireplace my sister's wood burning stove when she gave that
away and went to strictly gas furnace heating.
