I tried various ttserver options and they seemed to make no difference, so I looked... .
I hit a brick wall around 1 million records per shard as well (sharding on the client side, nothing fancy) .
I just set the cache option and it is now significantly faster .

The only other one I know of is a fork of pytc but it looks like they have only done some refactoring and documentation work, so probably still only hash and b-tree support:

I am looking for a managed code library/API or samples that let me write and read cabinet (.cab) files. There is a CAB SDK here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310618 but the DLL that ships with it only supports native code.
