definition of "hacking" per se : there are laws against, for example, gaining unauthorized access to a computer system, theft of services -- someone was just prosecuted for that for hacking cable boxes.

For SD content you may be ok with RF, but for high definition I'd consider an HDMI-ethernet converter.

VGA to HDMI cable or adapter
if you also want to feed the audio signal to HDMI, therefore will not get a high definition picyure from blu ray drive even if do connect to tv with s- vhs.
