Today we had to make are own cables and I was wondering which is better to buy your cables or to make them yourself?
PS: I now hate cables....

My time is worth something :-) I have the cables run at a healthcare place they bought their own patch cables and we made custom lengths.
Pretty much eyeball it and order one up.

I am wondering, are the aftermarket HDMI VGA cables as good as the name brand? I'm looking for someone who's even crazier than me who has or will test one vs. the other with the millisecond timer so we will all know for certain!

Get official microsoft ones.
But off brand VGA cables are bad, end of story.

As far as power cables go, in my experience they don't make much difference, however clearer audio make some good entry level power cables that are under £50.00.
As an expensive one.

Of adding in your own trunking, one cheap way of keeping cables tidy is to use Spiral Wrap:

As far as what to label the cables with - I would stay away from anything specific....
The cables themselves are not generally labeled.
Of short cables to patch between panels, and keep a database / text file of computer-port number...
