I carry my Nikon P100 over my shoulders....
I carry a compact, relatively cheap camera and/or my cell.
That way it would be easily accessible, possibly even while riding .
Maybe a frame bag or bento bag would work (depending on size of camera).

In analogue days, a photographer was limited to film roll of 12, 24 or 36 shots so one was very careful about capturing the moment. Now with digital cameras cameras capable of 10fps bursts or more one has simply to squirt away and select the best expression...

You can transfer the images from the camera's memory card ....
At your photos on the camera screen, but at some point you will have to load them onto a computer then you don't need a laptop (as far as the camera is concerned).
