I think most programmers would realize that if they downcast an immutable object and mutate it, then they're going to introduce nasty bugs .
It's very common to return an NSMutableArray cast as an NSArray .

Just be wary that converting the bitset to a tertiary set (perhaps active, inactive, and undefined), or attempting to add data to each... .
At the end of the day, it's a simple integer shift, which is less costly than an array access by all accounts .
