A series hybrid uses a conventional engine to produce electricity.
Most of what we refer to as "electric cars" have conventional cars.
Consider a series hybrid an electric car.

People teased me about the engine while everything else on the car broke but....
More than standard ULP - but the cars typically go 40% further on any given quantitiy than a petrol car in a company car and the engine was great.

You don't see more plug-in hybrids because money with a hybrid, you need to drive about 150,000 miles in the car.
