While you could implement this using GD, you're best bet if you can control the server... .
Imagemagick is open source, so I guess you could translate the function to PHP .
I don't see why it shouldn't be possible with GD, but I can tell you it would be slow .

I mainly used 01 and 5160 and carving you also will make tools....
Not sure what the carving tools would be when bought.
1084 will be fine, might in turning tools.
Making my own carving and turning chisels is how I came to knife making.

Michaels usually carries carving tools, as does Hobby Lobby usually just a plastic handle and interchangeable....
Tools depending on the type of carving you intend to do and the type of wood you intend to work printmaking, go to an art supply store.
