Does anybody here have any experience with having gerbils or hamsters as pets? Are they much work? Do they smell? If you have a cat, can you adjust the cat to like the hamster so she won't try to eat it?

Only problem is they are easy to get attached to and they do not have long lifespan... .
They can be great pets and they are quite clean.
They don't smell....unless you decide in the morning.

I'm wondering if those of you who have pets spend as much on them as we spend on our dog. It's gotten better now that she's almost a year old and doesn't get as many "childhood diseases". But there's still dog food, treats, toys, dog tax, pet owner liability...
