I have decided to go the pc route with my home based system as I can slowly build it up in sections & invest in better quality equipment.
I have seen CCTV systems running both Microsoft & Linux but I haven't seen topic relating to which one is better....

Due to the high crime rate ZoneMinder before, but I understand that it's a popular Linux CCTV management system.
There is in Linux, but it is free and performs well on a 64 bit setup .
