The default boot has GParted GUI launchable from the desktop..
Another alternative is booting SysRescueCD.
One alternative is burn it to CD-R instead of DVD-R.
Particulary with older IDE Combo drives.
Is using Ubuntu 9.04 installation disc to re-partition almost just as good as GParted? Do you need to some how stop the installation after the re-partition? thanks. the reason of using this method is that GParted 0.4.6-1 cannot recognize my hard drive...

If GParted cannot see your drive then Ubuntu's tool.
But if GParted does not recognize your drive, then Ubuntu's tool will probably also have problems.

You shouldn't ntfsprogs Then restart gparted and you should be able to resize the partition.
It's not that much of a hassle, and it works with NTFS .

If you can use a live cd to boot to linux and use gparted to completely wipe have access to any bootalbe linux distros with gparted then try the recovery console and run fixboot.
PC will boot from.
About Gparted over UDA: It works for me till Gparted 0.4.4-1, upper versions my uda won't add being unable to copy vmlinuz1 or somewhat.

However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used.

Tried booting with a Linux Live CD / Gparted Live CD to see if this happens still? Are you trying to modify a mounted partition? Unmount it and then try running gparted.

Aldo try formatting as ext4 reformat the drive is gparted....
Why not plug the external back in, boot from your installer CD, and re-format from your installer CD, and re-format that drive as ntfs? See what happens.
