I recently wrote a Vector 3 class, and I submitted my normalize() function for reviewal to a friend. He said it was good, but that I should multiply by the reciprocal where possible because "multiplying is cheaper than dividing" in CPU time.
My question...

I am far from knowledgeable....
The CPU has to do more.
Here's a post on the Stack talking about this:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/506237/why-is-float-division-slow/506241

Many clients see only the "per hour" price and go "eek" and choose a "cheaper" coder to do the job. Very often these clients ends up with a complete MESS because they wanted to save a couple of bucks per hour.

On-time delivery of usable functionality? That's what any price advantage they might... .
Quality? Perhaps cheaper isn't best.
Hours? If all they're buying is someone who shows up and types, cheaper is best.
The client thinks they're buying.

On the other hand, you may be able to stick with the i7-920 if you went with a lower end motherboard ... .
Avoiding the Core i7 will let you pick up a cheaper motherboard and possibly cheaper RAM.
Or perhaps the triple core Phenom II X3 720.

My logging code uses the return value of backtrace() to determine the current stack depth (for pretty printing purposes), but I can see from profiling that this is a pretty expensive call.
I don't suppose there's a cheaper way of doing this? Note that...

Can't you just carry a TLS variable around with you called "depth" and increment... .
If your pretty-printing functions are reasonably contained, then pass in the indent (or indent size) as a parameter, and just increment it when you call other display functions .

Gas will be the cheaper than electric cooker because the cost of electricity is more than the gas of electricity is the main reason to the control problem.

That could skew averages, but that is very different than saying "PHP developers are cheaper than .NET saturated with cheaper, less-skilled PHP developers than the .Net market.
