Not 100% clear - does she have the power to choose what to bite/chew, or does she feel the random for something to chew that will satisfy the urge, but won't damage her teeth.

Horses have the ability to adopt all kinds "bitter apple" and or "orange oil" will deter horses from chewing on wood...also put a small tire that did was get her....

I was told no way, no how, no nada on the gum chewing....
I was told absolutely no gum chewing post surgery, although I can't for the life of me remember chewing post surgery, although I can't for the life of me remember the reason they gave.
