I am new to machining and to this web site. I recently got a used Harbor Freight 3 in 1 model 5980. The mill has a Jacobs chuck in the quill head and I've read that one should not mill with a drill chuck. I understand it's better to use a tool...

That section also refers to a "Drilling chuck - JS16".
Might be a good idea to place a piece of wood on page 12.
Is the chuck may be held in a collet, with a straight shank.

3" or 4" faceplate would be large enough, you don't need a chuck you can use a waste block attached to the faceplate. Go to You Tube you can see how it is done.

Plate in the upper right used for? You don't need a chuck but once you have one you'll wonder how you can.
