The last time I did any significant climbing was July last year. There was an August 3 ride that one decent climb in it.
The upcoming ride will be a significant test and the hardest ride in two years.

As you add more children, you simply look up it's parent's top parent id and insert the appropriate row in... .
I would suggest creating an additional table with id and top parent id .
In my experience, SQL isn't very good at this kind of query (recursion) .
