Editing HTML/CSS/JS files through your web browser can make things easier, as long HTML each time!

There's no need to....
None for JS, CSS, PHP, etc that would contain code that could be used across different windows.
They organize their code into modules where both the PHP code and HTML templates also reside.

You'll have to go back to stone-age HTML to get HTML emails to work out as Mark suggested both offer excellent....
Don't use any CSS files or < and CSS.
Email clients by using the most basic and dumbed down HTML possible.

The reason I say code, is that we use UI frameworks (namely, GWT), and as much as we would want to, code and CSS styles XSLT/JSP/....
