I have been attempting to learn proper trim details . This crown detail seems wrong .The details are down but the top of the crown is heavy . It is thick ,shouldn't the top be thinner .

That's your basic "Colonial" or "Classic" crown planer or similar tool remove material to get the crown to maintain a straighter horizontal line to determine the "proper" position of crown....
I think you may have neglected an attachment.
