I have an old C++ COM component which has to stay in Visual Studio 6.0 format. I can't for the life of me figure out how to debug the code in the actual COM component.

All you have to do to register a COM object is write the appropriate keys to the registry (look into the WiX toolkit ; it makes registering COM objects easy) then the OS will automatically prompt the user for elevation at install time.
