I was wondering, the other day I went to check a J bass at the local deal I tried a P bass Am Standard, I didn't like the thick neck, but the bass has tone of mojo and tone!
Are there P basses with neck more like the J necks?

The nut width on a Jazz bass is usually 1 1/2 Fender offered a "narrow maple ....
The 7.25" is the neck radius.
If you want a P with a thinner neck, try the others will chime in soon.
While the standard and reissue Js are 1.5" at the nut .

I just traded back for a guitar I had many moons ago do to strat necks causing me pain. I'm going to be on the look out to buy brand new soon, so I need some suggestions as to what kind of neck to specifically look out for. I know modern c-shaped necks...

Deathgripping any neck will eventually cause problems.
Exert only enough force to fret the note(s) cleanly.
Whatever neck profile you end up with, make it a point to practice playing with a relaxed hand.

I have thought of using a big fat baseball neck and sanding a V into it at times.
I would think this would negate the advantage of the soft V that fills the palm so nicely .
