I am new to Scala and may be missing something very basic but I couldn't think of a case where a companion object (singleton) for a class is needed. Why would I want to create a class, say Foo and also create a companion object for it.
Can anyone please...

In fact, that's exactly how the compiler does it.
The companion object basically provides a place where one can put 'static' methods.

Tl;dr: Companions in D3 should have the collectable nature of pets in WoW, while perhaps retaining their gold gathering ability. I like the simple mechanic of companions in D3, but I think you have seriously missed on making them awesome . Story aside...
