What kind of compensation should be given to a developer that comes up with a new idea or business unit for a business they work for? Should they get stock options, salary inreases, percent ownership in their product, etc.? I would like to hear experiences...

IMO you should think of compensation....
But at the next pay-review period, I would bring it up as part of the negotiation .
The certification itself was part of your compensation.
If the company paid for it, I wouldn't ask for more because of it .

Usually the image processing I do is highly time sensitive, so a complex algorithm like the one you're seeking wouldn't work .

If the primitive functionality you have....
For example if you know that your interval is every 20 minutes, fire off the first interval, check what the time was, and adjust the next interval start time .
I would use the system clock to check your interval .

If i'm wrong on that you should be able to construct the opposite transform if you know your scale and translation values .
I think you can inverse the transform to do what you want .
