Here's the scenario.
I am a Ph.D. in STEM who was working for the last few years as a full-time faculty, now unemployed but eligible for unemployment (applied on-line and a determination was made). I'm in Ohio, USA

For me to get unemployment I have to show that I'm trying to find a job, so I am trying for teaching positions but don't land some, then I should qualify for unemployment benefits.

I have never, ever, ever, in 30+ years, heard of an employee's unemployment benefit being upped, if it were not for the fact that there have been weird unemployment decisions made before.

Those payments stopped sometime in early 2010.
Affecting the number of weeks of unemployment a given person is eligible to receive, but I don't seem of a state's regular unemployment payments.

If you are laid off check your unemployment office the next day to find out if you are eligible for unemployment. I was laid off Dec 2, 2010 and was eligible for unemployment Dec 3, 2010. I was a pharma rep w/60 days of pay, 20 weeks of severance, etc...
