Having a fairly old laptop, I only have Scale open programs neatly tiled....
It places all windows within a workspace (or all open windows) scaled in rows and columns for selection.

I run Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 3D on my machine and it does a good job .

It has been a while since I've used compiz, so I don't know if it has a setting like that, but there is an XFCE setting that can do what you need, and I think it will work with Compiz too.
