Encrypted files look like random noise, and there's no way to compress random data are lucky....
What encryption tool are you using? As mentioned, encrypted filesSadly, No.

I want to compress some files (into the ZIP format) and encrypt them if possible using C#. Is there some way to do this? Can encryption be done as a part of the compression itself?

GZip : A single file compressed with deflate-in....
The most popular one.
They can be done chained (encrypt a compressed stream or compress a Zip file to compress the data.

You should compress the file first (while it still behaves in a way data is indistinguishable....
But since encrypted data is very similar to random data, it doesn't compress very well - so will save little if any space.

In the same way, you canSQL 2008 has the native abilty to compress backups and when the database uses tranparent data features and they work a treat.

As mentioned by Brian, the file contents shouldn't matter: bytes are bytes.
Here's methods in its framework.
Your choice of compression will be affected by the file content, but not encryption.
