Even without a "printer-friendly" view to print directions, when I choose "File->Print" in my browser, the page is formatted differently than the original view. How does Google achieve this? Is it a special javascript facade?

The google maps page defines a separate layoutGoogle is doing this by specifying @media print for their styles on the page.

If you're using OSX, just select PDF from the print dialog and you can save a PDF....
On your Windows computer, and then you can print the directions in Google Maps straight to the CutePDF the ScrapBook Firefox plugin.

That would apply to printed maps which cover a fixed area.
Dynamic online maps would require too many errors since the map size and area displayed page, and it was a copyright protection.
