I typically use my tv (42 in) for just racing games... .
Go to CCC>My digital flat panels > HDTV support > and adjust the scaling to fit the Tv .
- Use CCC to change the scaling options.
-You can try changing the aspect ratio on the TV itself .

You might have to change your resolution down..
Tune the TV to the HDMI output.
If your computer supports HDMI out, it should just be a simple plug and play.

Converting component video to DVI will cost more money and give you a worse .
Honestly, it'll be cheaper to just buy a newer upscaling-DVD player that supports HDMI, and get a cheap HDMI-to-DVI cable.
