I suspect every company has, out of necessity, one or more spreadsheets on a shared drive that several people access/edit on a regular basis. Inevitibly users try to open the document at the same time and get messages about the file being locked for editing...

To me this sounds like Excel is not correctly re-establishing the lock for User B when User A leaves .
The only thing I can think of would be to use an file versioning utility, or use the "Share Workbook" feature .

What solutions are there for working on a LaTeX document on both Windows and Linux?
It's a large document, and I will be working daily on both platforms so compatibility is essential if it's two different pieces of software.
