I would recommend hosting, but if you just need the drive letter....
I've never encountered an SVN repository running on an external hard drive like this.
Why not map the drive as the same letter everywhere? I think you're probably right.
Usually when you have shared folder or a drive on a network location, it's browsable through Microsoft Windows Network. This is however painfully slow. Often when the computer or network location cannot be found, it takes ages before you get an error ...

If your on Windows 7 I would recommend mapping a drive to a FTP service.

Much simpler would be to connect it to one of the computers and share.

Admittingly i dont know that much about laptops.
Performance wise yes.
Cant imagine HDD to SSD making a whole lot of difference in terms of overheating.. .
Processor, gpu, and battery would be the hottest.
