For external hard drives in this question, I'm referring to traditional HDDs; the kind with spinning metal inside of them (no RAM or flash-based super-high-performance hardware): Is there a significant speed difference between USB 2.0 and FireWire 400...

Yesterday I came home from work to notice that not only had my PC reboot, it was stuck in the BIOS detecting hard drives. I eventually got the machine to boot but once I got into Windows it locked up. When I was able to get back into Windows (Win XP SP...

I'm designing a file server based around ZFS and I'm considering using USB flash drives in RAID 1 as boot devices. It seems that few people do this, and I'm wondering why. From what I see, using USB flash drives have some benefits: Cheaper than hard drives...

There's no "positive locking" to keep them in place.

I know some older computers can't, can most new ones? I hate staying at people's houses and asking if I can install stuff on their computers, and have then go through their history and complain about the websites I went to. But I understand that it is...

How do I put it in a hard drive so it will boot from a computer to use.
That is what I know how to use.
I have over 100++ old hard drives, ranging from 100MB Quantums to 200GB WDs, most of them PATA, some SATA. Most still working. The squirrel mentality runs in my family - hoard everything, discard nothing. Thus, and this is a relevant question - any suggestions...

I tended to do with my old/good hard drives (for some reason they outlast the computers in the past is open it up and basically just hang them on the wall, with the top cover off, hard drives, it looks like a very nice....
(My initial post on my failing hard drive--now confirmed--is sort of in the way where I hope to go in terms of remedy, hence this post): My 2007 24 iMac recently suffered an internal hard drive failure, confirmed by DiskWarrior. Everything else on the...

The amount of failures on replacement hard drives (internal) users are experiencing in 24" iMacs I outlined above confirmed so I can go ahead and buy the dock and new hard drive.
Hi, I occasionally buy second hand hard drives and I would like to scan them for any software of interest to me. However, each PC has its own motherboard and for some reason, software on another PC's hard drive, although I can see the yellow folder, is...

It's probably is out of production, and your system will only get older as time goes on .
Should do the trick, excepting the whole "imprinted hard drive" thing with licensing.
I'd probably have about 8TB of External Hard drives that has tons of data from the past 10 years or so of my life. Since I moved into my new house, I haven't power them on. Is storing them in a box safe? or storing them in the attic or below in the basement...

Why store them? Don't ever expect hardware especially hard drives to last in storage it's not all at once.
Storage.
I'm looking for a quick, simple, and effective way to erase the hard drives of computers that my company will be getting rid of (donation to charity, most likely). Ideally, I would like a single-purpose bootable utility CD that upon booting, finds all...
