A friend of mine I running a non-for-profit organisation which was recently donated a couple of old PCs without any software licenses.
The computers are intended for a typical office use, sending emails, preparing documents, brochures, presentations etc...

On my office machine, MS Word 2010, in particular, is so incredibly slow that it renders nearly any work impossible to do. Simply moving a scrollbar can take more than a minute. If I need to access the Start Menu while Word is open, that also takes forever...

The MS Office provided with this new laptop won't work becuase the the 25 digit key number (on the sticker under the laptop) keeps being rejected when I'm prompted to enter it .
Any ideas out there ?

I run OCS inventory which tracks hardware and software....
Personally I Like the excel approach the best when combined with automated inventory.
How do you do asset inventory? That would likely inventory software and could check on licenses too.

Some of the work reports I use are Excel sheets using Visual Basic
macros.
Which means I have to use my Netbook to look at them, or go and
physically sit in an admin office in a store.

Back, I think Excel is one of the best things MS have ever produced.
The years there have been only two pieces of MS software that I thought were any good, Excel and fdisk.
