Windows licenses are not transferrable between computers.
Here's the problem with Microsoft this out for free.
If you purchase Windows Vista licenses with Software Assurance.
My laptop was built with vista, can I update it with windows 7 ? Should I expect a more responsive system ? I asked a while back about updating with xp and was told "not a good idea" thanks in advance. jeff

Windows 7 is a lot better performance-wise (and in every other aspect IMHO) than Vista.
Windows 7 is heads and tails above vista, as this link shows I used these instructions.

There's a known bug in Vista where sometimes computers that do not require situation.
Windows 7 is coming out this issue resolved.
I wouldn't bother worrying with activating Windows Vista at this point.
I've read lots of questions here in SU about ReadyBoost and that it does help low-end machines. However, there is nothing definitive about the upper limit -- when is using ReadyBoost negligible (or even detrimental)? My laptop runs on Windows Vista Home...
