Your problem could be the break statement
Edit: Also, you probably want just 1 loop, first you initialize universe_array n_iter times, doing nothing after the first time .

Hi, I am trying to find the easiest & quickest way to get from Portland airport to North Conway. Driving isn't an option. So far I've been unsuccessful finding a bus or train. I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks very much.

If you go through with such a scheme, your best bet is probably a bus from Portland for the company that operates bus service to both Portland ME and North Conway NH -- unfortunately, as already to Boston, but the last I knew, only....

To experiment, I've (long ago) implemented Conway's Game of Life (and I'm aware of this related question!).
My implementation worked by keeping 2 arrays of booleans, representing the 'last state', and the 'state being updated' (the 2 arrays being swapped...

I'm guess it's real good for optimizing the space of the grid since you basically only represent the occupied... .
Don't exactly know how this can be done, but I remember some of my friends had to represent this game's grid with a Quadtree for a assignment .

Wanted to visit white mountains ,north conway ,burlington so i can visit stowe to boston 8th oct for 3 nights then north conway for 3 nights ie white mountain area driving onn leave me 2 nights free mayb i will go....
