I am running Fedora16 on my macbook and cat /proc/cpuinfo, or gnome-systement-monitor or mpstat -A only show me one core of my Intel Core Duo T7400 which I believed was with 2 core.
I don't know how to know if the second core is broken, unavailable...

So you must specify the mysql directory.
Then the problem with Mac OS is that it doesn't install things at the same standard emplacement than on linux .
Have you installed mysql on the machine ?
That's the first thing you must do .

My scenario -
I have three intel core 2 duo imacs, one 17" blonde, one 20" blonde, and an aluminum. They all run just fine, thank you, in SL.
The two older 'blonde' imacs have 2 gigs of ram; the aluminum 2 1/2 gigs.
If I buy a 4 gig ram kit from macsales...

SL (for average home users with NO gaming) seems to run best at minimum 6 GBs .
It runs is a good thing.
Core Duo ~= Mac Mini.
Suspect it'll do just as well with Mountain Lion too .
Add 6 GB of RAM.
