Replacing the CV joint is not an easy jobYes, dont listen to any of them mate, the Ax cv is a spider joint, its assembled as a complete unit at the factory, you cant remove....
If you are contemplating DIY buy the Haynes manual.

You should also replace the axle seals while you have them out .

Its fairly involved and messy but if you have the tools and aptitude its doable .

I do wish the FSM was a little more detailed in the CV joint area.
I do have some basic 100 Series DIY experience under my belt (five tire rotations, oil, DRL disable).

36mm Socket
Breaker bar or Air-gun

So I've finally got my xi in good shape electrically after a bunch of funky problems. Then I noticed a skip/popping while in reverse at near full locked steering. After reading a bit, this pointed to CV joints. After about a week, a very noticeable vibration...

I just need a few days off to do so, but The driver side bearing+cv axle+ needle bearing are next I got as good as a slide hammer for popping the inner CV joint out of the diff also.

I did this until I could no longer twist the CV boot on the shaft.
I would crimp then test how loose/tight it was the crimp some more .
And use CV boot Clamp crimping tool to tighten clamp.

The outer CV boot of the passenger side got just ripped off (less than 20 miles ago..). Which choice would be better:
1) replace the boot and keep the factory axle (2003 2.7T 50k miles). The CV joint itself is good and not at all damaged. Parts cost $...

Given that, and the cost of a new CV joint, why not spend the same money (possible: : The outer CV boot of the passenger side got just ripped off (less than 20 miles ago..).
With a new one.
